Research Data Management

DMPTool

DMPTool is a free online tool that helps you create a Data Management Plan using a variety of templates and guidelines based on funder and institutional requirements. You can also view published plans and share your plans with others.

Signing in

  • Go to https://dmptool.org and log in or sign up at Sign in / Sign up
  • Use your ZU email address if you don’t have an account yet. Select Zayed University as your institution

Starting a new plan

  • Select Create Plan from the top menu
  • Enter the title and primary research organization. If you want to practice using the tool first, select mock project for testing, practice, or educational purposes
  • Enter the primary funding organization or select No funder associated with this plan or my funder is not listed
  • Click Create Plan to proceed

Project Details

  • Enter the basic details such as project title, abstract and dates
  • If you’re working with sensitive data (e.g. personal, medical or proprietary data), choose Research outputs may have ethical concerns and describe the ethical concerns and protocols

Collaborators

  • You can add two types of contributors:
  1. Project Contributors: people who work in the research project
  2. DMP Collaborators: people who can read and edit the data management plan
  • To add a Project Contributor, click Add a contributor and fill in the details
  • To add a DMP Collaborator, enter the email address under Invite Collaborators, choose the permissions and click Submit

Write Plan

  • Enter the details for each section. The sections may vary according to your funder’s requirements. If you haven’t entered the funder, a default template will be used
  • You can find instructions for each section under the Guidance tab on the right
  • You can also add Comments for each section to share with your collaborators
  • Click Save when you have entered all the details

Research Output

  • You can create a list of planned outputs by clicking Add a research output (optional)

Download

  • You can download your plan in various formats

Finalize / Publish

  • You can publish your completed plans (at least 50% of the questions must be answered)
  • You can choose from 3 visibility options:
    • Private: visible to me, specified collaborators and administrators at my organization
    • Organization: anyone at my organization can view
    • Public: anyone can view
  • You can also get a DMP ID for your plan and publish it in your ORCID record. To register your plan, you need to have the funder information and authorize DMPTool to add works to your ORCID record
