  Class Guide

This is a class guide to help in researching the history of mathematics and statistics.

  How do I begin?

  • Know your assignment & what kind of resources you need (books, articles, web sites, etc.)
  • Brainstorm about your topic (write down as many key words as possible before searching for information)
  • Try broader, narrower, or related terms:
    • math / mathematics / mathematician
    • geometry / algebra
    • quadratic / "number theory" / "mathematical notation"
    • statistics / "statistical methods"
    • Al-Khowarizmi / Al-Khwarizmi

  Keywords to try

Try these keywords and phrases when searching for materials -- whether online or through the library catalog or databases:

  • mathematics history
  • mathematicians history
  • mathematics, ancient
  • mathematics, Arab
  • mathematics, Greek
  • mathematicians biography
  • scientists biography
  • algebra history
  • geometry history
  • statistical methods

  Search techniques

  • Think of multiple key words
  • Put phrases in quotes
    • Example: "statistical methods"
  • Combine words
    • Example: mathematic* histor*
  • Use truncation *
    • This searches for variations of a term
    • Example:  histor* --> history, historical

Try a keyword search

You can limit to available items in your campus library, i.e. Abu Dhabi or Dubai, or leave the search at Entire Collection  

 

If it is an ebook as the one above, click on the Website link

On the item's catalog record, note the Location, Call Number, and Status to locate the book.
