How to Create a Research Poster

This guide provides resources and information on how to communicate your research visually.

Top Tips for Poster Formatting

  • Important information should be readable from about 5 feet away
  • Title should be short and draws interest
  • Word counts will vary by discipline, but in general should be a condensed (and much shorter) version of your research
  • Use bullet points, numbering, and headers so it is easy to read
  • Effective use of graphics, colors, and fonts
  • Consistent and clean layout
  • Include your name, contact information, institutional affiliation, acknowledgements, and references for major sources of information

Poster sections

Sections you may want to include on your research poster, depending on your discipline and research design:

  • Research question or hypothesis
  • Methodology: What is the research process that you used? Explain how you did your research.
  • Findings: What did you learn? Summarize your conclusions. Emphasize why this research is impactful.
    • Interesting quotes from interviews
    • Charts, tables, or relevant images to illustrate your findings and create a break from the text
  • Consider including a brief narrative of what you learned: What was your project's most interesting/surprising aspect?
  • Recommendations and/or next steps for future research.
  • References: Limit the references you include on your poster, but cite major sources that influenced your work or research design.
