Searching Historical Newspapers

These historical newspaper databases are a major primary source for many kinds of research.  The two main companies/vendors that provide these databases are Gale and Proquest.

Gale Historical Newspaper Databases:

  • Associated Press Collections Online  (a journalism archival source, not full newspapers)
  • Daily Mail Historical Archive, 1896-2004
  • The Economist Historical Archive, 1843-2011
  • The Financial Times Historical Archive, 1888-2010
  • The Sunday Times Digital Archive, 1822-2006
  • The Times Digital Archive, 1785-2006

ProQuest Historical Newspaper Databases:

  • The Guardian (1821-2003) & The Observer (1791-2003)
  • The New York Times (1851-2013) with Index (1851-1993)
  • The Times of India, 1838-2002
  • The Wall Street Journal, 1889-1994

If you know a specific event in history that you are researching, then you can search across these newspapers, but do so by searching across Gale (using the Artemis Primary Sources or the NewsVault interface), and/or across ProQuest (using the XXXXXXXXXX interface).   Be sure to limit your search by dates for best results.

Hint:   Spellings change quite a bit over time.  For example, English spellings of Arabic words and names can vary widely. Be sure to use the Boolean Operator “OR” in your searches.
