Topic 1

Topic 1:

Are natural resources necessary for successful development?

Much has been written about the “resource curse”. Does having natural resources help countries develop or do they become too dependent on them, causing the country’s stagnation? Or are natural resources irrelevant to human development?

Pick a country of your choice to illustrate your thesis

Building on the knowledge you will acquire in Unit 3, and your understanding of global news, write a four-part reflective response (i.e. like an essay) as follows:

  1. Begin with a clear thesis statement and introduce the country you picked.
  2. Provide basic information on the country selected and its resources (or lack of resources).
  3. Using relevant and updated data and indicators you studied, explain/analyze why the country you chose was successful in achieving a high level of development (or unsuccessful).
  4. What, in your view, are the remaining challenges for this country and what can be learnt from this example/model for other countries?

Some resources to get you started:

  • The Fix: How Nations Survive and Thrive in a World of Decline. New York: Tim Duggan Books. (The Case Study on Botswana is of particular interest).
  • “The Resource Curse:  The Political and Economic Challenges of Natural Resource Wealth” National Resource Governance Institute Reader, March 2015

Topic 2

Topic 2:

What influence does politics have on development and gender inequality?

When a new President or Prime Minister takes office, he or she often enacts new legislation or modifies the policies of his or her predecessor.  Choose one country and discuss the effects that a change in leadership had on HDI and GII indicators.

Topic 3

Topic 3:

How does gender shape development?

Countries in the graph above have been chosen to illustrate an important trend in educational patterns in the developing world.

Your task is to write a four-part reflective response (i.e. essay) as follows:

Begin with a clear thesis statement and introduce your argument clearly, to include:

  1. Identify the trend shown in the graph above.
  2. Identify and explain an effect of this trend on economic development in the developing world.
  3. Include a case-study: compare and contrast data on gender and development in two countries of your choice - one with a low GII and one with a high GII.
  4. Include the vocabulary of relevant concepts studied in Unit 3.
